History

Marathon is a city made famous from a battle fought by the Athenians to defend their independence from the invading Persian army in 490 B.C. Although heavily outnumbered the Athenians triumphed and this encounter, the Battle of Marathon is perhaps the single most important battle in Greek history.

The word “marathon” as we know it today can also be credited to a soldier named Pheidippides who ran from a battlefield near the city of Marathon to Athens conveying the unbelievable news of a Greek victory. Shortly after his historic run Pheidippides collapsed to his death.

When the Olympic games were inagurated in 1896 the legend of Pheidippides was commemorated by a 24.85 mile race from a bridge in Marathon to the Olympic stadium in Athens.

With perseverance, discipline and hard work like that of Pheidippides the proprietors and staff of Marathon Souvlaki Restaurant have been serving Greek culinary delights to customers since 1977. Emphasizing quality and efficiency, our service and dedication extends itself to patrons of all ages.
